A Simpler, Smarter Approach to Everyday EV Driving

Hyundai has officially unveiled the IONIQ 3, and it’s clear this isn’t just another compact EV launch. This is a strategic move to bring electric driving closer to everyday European life, designed to be simpler, more practical, and far more intuitive than what many drivers have come to expect.

A new kind of EV design: The “Aero Hatch”

The standout feature here is Hyundai’s new “Aero Hatch” typology, a design approach that balances aerodynamic efficiency with real-world practicality.

Rather than chasing aggressive styling at the cost of usability, the IONIQ 3 leans into clean lines and smart proportions. The low front flows into a long, uninterrupted roofline, creating a silhouette that not only reduces drag (targeting an impressive 0.263 Cd) but also maximises interior space, particularly for rear passengers.

It’s a subtle shift, but an important one. This is a car designed for comfort as much as efficiency.

Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design philosophy is evident throughout, with sharp surfaces, minimal clutter, and signature pixel lighting that reinforces the IONIQ identity. Small design details, like the Morse code-inspired lighting elements designed to add personality without overcomplicating things.

Built for real European driving

Where the IONIQ 3 really starts to make sense is in how it’s engineered for daily use.

Built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, the car uses a 400-volt architecture that prioritises efficiency and usability over headline-grabbing specs. Buyers can choose between two battery options:

  • Standard Range: up to 214 miles (WLTP)
  • Long Range: targeting up to 308 miles (WLTP)

That long-range figure puts it right at the top of its segment, but more importantly, it covers the majority of real-world use cases, commuting, school runs, and weekend trips, without range anxiety creeping in.

Charging is equally practical. Fast DC charging takes the battery from 10% to 80% in around 29 minutes, while AC charging of up to 22 kW supports flexible home and workplace setups.

Technology that simplifies, not complicates

One of the biggest frustrations with modern EVs is overcomplicated tech, lack of physical buttons and the need to use a touch screen to do X Y and Z. Hyundai seems to have taken a different route with the IONIQ 3.

This is the first European Hyundai to feature the new Pleos Connect infotainment system, built on Android Automotive OS. The result is a clean, responsive interface that feels familiar, customisable, and easy to use.

Instead of overwhelming drivers, the system focuses on:

  • Seamless navigation and EV route planning
  • Plug & Charge functionality
  • Digital Key 2 for smartphone-based access
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability for powering devices on the go

Everything is designed to remove friction from the EV experience, not add to it.

A compact car that doesn’t feel compact

Despite its size, the IONIQ 3 delivers interior space that rivals larger vehicles.

The flat-floor layout seen in most EVs, and long wheelbase create a genuinely usable cabin, with enough room to comfortably seat three adults in the rear, something that’s often compromised in this segment.

Hyundai describes the interior as a “Furnished Space,” and it shows. The layout feels more like a living environment than a traditional cockpit, with thoughtful materials, ambient lighting, and optional features like Relaxation Seats and a BOSE® premium sound system.

Practicality hasn’t been overlooked either. A 441-litre luggage capacity, enhanced by the cleverly integrated Megabox, positions the IONIQ 3 as one of the most usable compact EVs on the market.

Safety and driver confidence included

For everyday driving, confidence matters just as much as performance.

The IONIQ 3 comes equipped with Hyundai SmartSense, including advanced features like Highway Driving Assist 2, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Blind-Spot View Monitor. These systems are designed to reduce driver workload and make both motorway and urban driving less stressful.

Add in projection LED headlamps with intelligent lighting and a full suite of airbags, and it’s clear Hyundai is prioritising safety without overcomplicating the experience.

Designed and built for Europe

Another key detail, this isn’t a global model adapted for Europe. The IONIQ 3 has been designed specifically for European customers and will be produced in Hyundai’s Türkiye facility.

That local focus shows in everything from its size and efficiency to its balance of performance (up to 105 mph top speed) and practicality.
